Abstract:
This paper attempts to delineate the role of waqf institution in financing education in the history of the Ottoman Egypt. The discussion will be focused merely on major educational institutions namely kuttabs, mosques and madrasahs that existed during the Ottoman Egypt from the date of conquest till before the French Occupation (1517-1798). The study showed that at the time the Ottoman ruled, Egypt was already rich with waqf properties endowed by the previous dynasties. Therefore, when the Ottomans took over the reign, they did not only erect new educational buildings but also continue to support and maintain the existing ones. With this stance, the waqf institution remained significant to support the Muslim educational system and became a formidable economic force that encouraged the economical, social and cultural development in the Islamic civilization.
