Synopsis
In Malaysia, rail projects have increasingly come under the spotlight due to the billions of ringgit that are involved as the country embarks on a rail expansion drive, that includes the extension and expansion of Kuala Lumpur LRT system, Klang Valley MRT1, MRT2 and MRT3, the KTMB North-South rail electrification double tracking project (EDTP), coast to coast railway and a high-speed rail (HSR) line from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore. A comprehensive human resource and development program is imperative to execute and ensure such sustainability. The Malaysian government Future Rail 2030 Roadmap initiatives have clearly marked the importance for the academia and rail industry players to synergise their activities in achieving the undeniable global and national railway expansion needs.
This presentation will include an overview of the global rail industry which is already highly complex and sophisticated. Rail Industry issues that will be discussed include the principles of customer-driven forces, putting rail transportation in reach of people, providing an end to end journey, reducing the environmental impact, carbon smart operations, energy efficiency, and supporting the economy and optimising the railway through Internet of Things (IoT).
This talk will also discuss the past, present and future of railway transport in Malaysia and neighboring countries. Railway systems engineering is a multi-faceted engineering discipline dealing with the design, construction and operation of all types of railway systems. It encompasses a wide range of engineering disciplines, including civil, computer, electrical, mechanical, industrial and production engineering. Hence it is imperative for IEM and Malaysian Institutes of Higher Learning (IHL) to play important roles in the nurturing of local talents to become international technical and managerial experts in all railway related matters in the foreseeable future.

UTM-IR (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Institutional Repository) has been ranked 282nd place from a total list of 2693 repositories by the Webometrics Ranking Web of World Repositories according to the July 2016 World Rank listing. This places UTM-IR in 3rd place in the Malaysia Country Rank listing.
The Webometrics Ranking Web of World Repositories is published twice a year. Data are collected within the first week of January and July and are released to the public by the end of the month. The objective of the ranking is to promote Open Access Initiatives supporting the use of repositories for scientific evaluation purposes.
Calculations for the ranking have been subjected to a few changes compared to the previous calculation methodology as follows:

Smartphone owners have yet another reason to stare at their device. Game developer Niantic last month released Pokémon Go—a location-based, augmented reality game for iOS and Android devices. More than 75 million people worldwide have downloaded the free game, which tracks your phone’s location and sends notifications when fictional creatures—with names such as Pikachu and Squirtle—are nearby. Their images appear on a street map of the player’s location. When the creature is less than 2 meters away, the map disappears and the creature appears on the screen as if it were in the same real-world location as the player.
Pokémon Go has made augmented reality more accessible, and almost commonplace, to millions of people—many of whom had never interacted with an AR game or device before.
AR expert John Rousseau, head of insights and strategy at Artefact, a design firm in Seattle, predicts that virtual and augmented reality apps such as Pokémon Go will become ubiquitous. At the Augmented World Expo, held in June in Santa Clara, Calif., Rousseau proposed three “laws of mixed reality” to ensure that AR and VR technology positively impacts society. So, how does Pokémon Go hold up?
The inspiration to go outside and become more social seems to benefit players with anxiety, depression, or autism. A mother of a 12-year-old autistic boy in North Carolina, for example, told ABC News that her son, who would normally be inside playing video games, is now taking his passion for gaming outside and relating to people with whom he normally would have difficulty interacting.
Although the game does not obey all three of Rousseau’s laws, it does have its plus side. In addition to the benefits already listed, the game encourages exercise and teaches players about local historic landmarks that have been designated as Pokéstops. It’s also speeding up the adoption of augmented reality—for better or worse.
