Day 330 Task – Mock Viva for My First PhD Student

Today we had a Mock Viva session for my first PhD student, Nur Nazlina Saimon which was conducted at our house. The venue was decided because students are not allowed to enter UTM yet unless he or she has official written permission from UTM student affairs, which will take quite some time to be obtained. Hence, we decided just to launched the Mock Viva at home, directly using Webex for her to present. The lecturers and students are used to online class and presentation but for Nazlina, she is not used to this because she’s a Phd student who do not require any online meeting or class, and I have only been contacting her for the passed months using whatsapp and email, if not a face to face meeting.

The session was very fruitful and a very long one. Nazlina is a very good and dedicated student. Imagine starting the session at 11am and it ended at 3.30pm. Many fundamental and basic questions were thrown by PM Dr. Mazura Jusoh, whom is co-supervisor #1. All her questions were really challenging yet important. I hope Nazlina will improved the slides and be better equipped for the second mock presentation next week, before heading to the Viva on the 2nd of December 2020. InsyaAllah. Amin.

Day 329 Task – More of Journal Checkings and Preparations.

Today after my ITE Class, I decided to continue work on another 2 journals that has been queuing in the pipeline. I am working on my PhD student’s manuscript which is related to costing analysis of our catalysts and reactor system which we plan to submit to Energy Conversion and Management Journal, another reputable journal. The impact factor of this journal is mentioned below:

Impact Factor: 8.208 ℹ
5-Year Impact Factor: 7.447

The content is there but we need some checking and fine tuning.

Another manuscript is once again my PSM student work, also Fatin Farihah which is to be submitted to IJRED Journal, a scopus journal. She had corrected and improved the manuscript. I am going to further check and enhance it before submitting to the editorial system.

A bit about IJRED Journal. The International Journal of Renewable Energy Development – (p-ISSN: 2252-4940; e-ISSN:2716-4519, CODEN: IJREAC, OCLC: 828722266) is an open access and peer-reviewed journal published by Center of Biomass and Renewable Energy (CBIORE) Diponegoro University Indonesia that aims to promote renewable energy researchs and developments, and it provides a link between scientists and practitioners. The International Journal of Renewable Energy Development has been identified in crossref with a DOI number: 10.14710/ijred.

Goshhh, this week I am anticipating myself to be extremely busy with journal publication management. Not only the ones that I shared here, but also AJEE journal that I am managing as Editor.

Day 328 Task – Journal Submissions

Today, I focused on the submission of 2 journals. One of it is a high profile reputable journal, FUEL, which was written from my PhD student, Nur Nazlina Saimon. The manuscript has been in development stage for more about 2 years already and it is supposed to be published like in the early of 2020, but it has not been successfully published yet, mainly due to my fault. But Alhamdulillah, it was submitted to the journal and I hope it will be considered for publication, insyaAllah. Amin.

Besides the journal submission mentioned above, I also submitted a manuscript which was written by my PSM student, Fatin Farihah to Perintis eJournal. This was the 2nd submission after 2 cycles of improvement. The first correction was made few days ago as was shared here. This was the 4th time I submitted to Perintis eJournal.

Actually, I planned to manage and work on there journals today, but the two that I have shared is enough to make me happy indeed. Alhamdulillah.

Day 327 Task – Taking A Break from Official Task

It’s a Saturday and I have several family activities going on. Very early in the morning, I received 2 invitations for journal review which came from a very reputable journal, but I just have to let it relaxed for a while in my inbox.

I do think about my tasks at the back of my head but once in a while I just need to take a break and just spend some quality time with my family.

Day 326 Task – Completing and Submitting Manuscript for Perintis

In the morning today, I raced to complete the make correction and improvement after receiving the review for our paper titled THERMODYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF METHANE-GLYCEROL DRY REFORMING TO HYDROGEN.

This is my 4th time submitting manuscript to Perintis Journal, with the first one started in 2017. Even though is a non-indexed journal, I still find it very useful publishing it because I have received several inquire about how to better use glycerin pitch waste obtained in the oleochemical industry from the splitting reaction. Several people and companies have contacted me to ask about new and practical ways to utilize glycerin pitch waste. Some of them asked me how to really formulate soap from glycerin pitch. Some asked me if I know who can buy glycerin pitch waste.

Perintis Journal has given my glycerin pitch a very useful exposure to the industry, and because of that I really appreciate continuing publishing with them.

Other journals that I have submitted to Perintis can be viewed below:

ASSESSING USECHH REGULATION 2000 IMPLEMENTATION ON

Day 324 Task – Jurying PERTANDINGAN MATLAMAT PEMBANGUNAN MAMPAN ISKANDAR PUTERI 2020

If yesterday I evaluated NALI2020 by assessing some of the innovative research in education highlighted, today I am assessing PERTANDINGAN MATLAMAT PEMBANGUNAN MAMPAN ISKANDAR PUTERI 2020, which is co-organized between UTM, JPNJ and IRDA. I am honored to be invited as jury for this time. It is not my first time as I was one of the jury for last year’s program. But this year, the methodology is very different and we all just have to adapt to the new norm.

Besides this jurying process, I also has successfully submitted a review manuscript to one Renewable Energy journal. It was such a monumental task and if this submission is approved, I can say it is one of the top of my achievement and my student’s achievement for this year. InsyaAllah. Please pray for us.

Day 323 Task – Jurying NALI2020

Work is hectic as usual, but due dates on certain task has forced me to prioritized certain tasks rather than other long due tasks. Today, I allocated the first half of my day to focus on evaluating some of the projects showcased by the educators from UTM and the rest of Malaysia.

I went through a special access to read through the documentations, extended abstract as well as view the youtube videos prepared by the participants. Honestly, it is very interesting to read the innovations and ideas showed by the participants. I’m impressed and happy to see the progress. This is what develops the advancement of knowledge and technology.

After completing this task, I am going to shift to another jurying task which is the PERTANDINGAN MATLAMAT PEMBANGUNAN MAMPAN ISKANDAR PUTERI 2020, which were organized collectively by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Johor (JPNJ)and Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA). I was shocked reading the email by the organizer that just reached my inbox just now because they say that the jurying starts from 17 (today) to 19 November 2020.

I hope I can do all these tasks. InsyaAllah

Day 322 Task – Introduction to Engineering Class

Every time I have a class, usually that will be the prime highlight of the day because it requires focus and preparations. We have specific outcomes to be achieved for each class. Having a course such as ITE that has 5 parallel sections requires enormous amount of careful coordination.

Today, before class, Dr Siti Hajjar and me rehearsed / simulate on how the class is going to be conducted when we integrate zoom breakup room and google jamboard. This is required since we want the students which are in their new expert teams to collectively discuss and create a new Peer Teaching Note that are prepared by expert of Learning Issues.

Subsequently, the experts will have to online present in class using the Jamboard PTN that they prepared earlier. It’s really interesting stuff, but it is the best thing we can do virtually. Obviously, the conventional Class Peer Teaching method is far better than this but i guessed we have just to accept and embrace of the new norm.

Day 321 Task – My Research Management

I have various activities and tasks that I need to managed in all my research grants. There are things like payment for chemicals that my student purchase, adding supplementary documentations for claiming the ICCME2020 conference fee that I participated last month, managing to pay my research student allowances, appointment of my new graduate research assistant (GRA) student, payment of analysis fee carried out at Unit Perkhidmatan Makmal Universiti (UPMU) and few more.

I just need to ensure that I am managing it well. The money for research need to be utilized as best as we can for research purpose.
