Spending My Sunday for METE1153: Occupational Safety in Energy System eLearning for Short Semester

Today, while most people were enjoying a relaxing Sunday, I spent a big chunk of my day preparing the e-learning materials for my Master of Energy course, METE1153 – Occupational Safety in Energy Systems. This short semester is my first, and I have six students enrolled.

Since this is my first time teaching during a short semester, I decided to take an approach that empowers self-learning. The idea is to design the course so that my students can learn almost independently, with clear and engaging content that guides them step by step.

For a short semester, combining e-learning with a self-learning strategy is both a smart and important choice because it addresses the challenges of compressed academic timelines while still supporting student success. Short semesters often have tight schedules and limited time for in-depth discussion, so e-learning provides students with the flexibility to access materials anytime and anywhere. This allows them to review and understand concepts at their own pace, revisiting complex topics as needed without being restricted to fixed class hours. A self-learning approach also maximizes student autonomy, encouraging them to take responsibility for their learning, manage their time effectively, and develop critical thinking skills, all of which are valuable beyond the classroom.

Another benefit is that this strategy frees up more time for application. With less emphasis on live lectures, students can focus on assignments, quizzes, and projects that reinforce their understanding, while class time can be used to clarify doubts and discuss real-world applications. For lecturers, once the content is prepared, such as notes, videos, and quizzes, it becomes a reusable resource for future semesters, including Online Distance Learning formats, ensuring consistent quality while reducing workload in the long term. This method also caters to different learning styles, providing materials that suit visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners, and supporting students who may need to move faster or slower than the average pace. Ultimately, by having access to comprehensive resources and the freedom to learn at their own pace, students in short semesters are better prepared for quizzes, assignments, and final assessments, making this approach a win-win for both learners and educators.

Two weeks ago, I had already completed the materials for Week 1. Today, I managed to prepare for Weeks 2 through 6, Alhamdulillah, it was a productive and fulfilling day. My aim is not just to teach this semester, but also to lay the foundation for my upcoming Online Distance Learning (ODL) version of METE1153 over the next two semesters. By doing the heavy lifting now, I believe the process will be much smoother later.

The content I prepared includes:

  • PDF lecture notes
  • Instructional videos
  • Self-quizzes
  • Report assignments
  • Video assignments
  • And other interactive elements

This week, InsyaAllah, I plan to continue developing Week 7 to Week 10 content and also work on marking Assignment 1 and Assignment 2. It’s a lot of work, but I’m genuinely happy to invest the time now so that my students — and future cohorts — will have a meaningful and enriching learning experience.

In the end, it’s all about giving our best effort today so that tomorrow becomes easier.

International Conference on Low Carbon Asia 2018 (ICLCA 2018) Story (24-25th OCTOBER 2018)

Photo session after the official opening ceremony of ICLCA 2018 😙

Alhamdulillah, ICLCA 2018 main event went smoothly well for today and yesterday. I am not in the committee but quite a number of my colleagues including my other half are the key committee members. I somehow played a small role as the Master of Ceremony for the first half or the first day opening session (opening speech, plenary talks and forum) as well as the co-chair for one of the parallel sessions. Thanks to the organising committee for giving me the opportunity to contribute in this awesome international event 🙂 .

Eventhough i didn’t personally present in this conference, i have 2 of my PhD students presenting 2 technical papers each (total of 4 papers). Alhamdulillah.

Earlier before the conference, my other half suggested to showcase and promote my book in ICLCA 2018. Hmmm… It was indeed an amazing idea that i haven’t thought and imagined before. Fortunately the organising committee was very positive on the idea and they were sporting and very encouraging. So the books were displayed on a section of the registration table. Redhuan, my other half’s master student took care and help managed my books. Thanks bro 😉 .

Jury for Low Carbon Society: Problem Based Learning (PBL) Semi-Finals 2018

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in collaboration with Johor State Education (JPNJ) and Kyoto Environmental Activities Association (KEAA) has been organizing the Low Carbon Society (LCS): Problem Based Learning since the early of 2016. This is the 3rd year the same program is organized, the difference is just that more schools are participating.

2016 – 3 Schools
2017 – 6 Schools
2018 – 12 Schools

I was fortunate to be invited once again as the jury. This is the 3rd time in 3 years. Earlier I was a jury in 2016 (hosted by Sekolah Engku Tun Aminah (SETA)) followed by 2017 (hosted by Sekolah Hidayah).
.
This year, the Semi Final is carried out at Majlis Bandaraya Iskandar Puteri (MBIP) Hall, Skudai in conjunction with the Seminar Iskandar Malaysia towards Low Carbon Society organized by MBIP, Sustainable Development Authority Malaysia (SEDA), UTM and Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA).
.
LCS PBL is one year learning activity and this event is for the students to showcase their proposals of solution towards low carbon issues at their schools or community around schools. There were 36 posters from 12 schools. The best 6 posters will proceed to the finals, which is held on the same day, after lunch.
.
From this event, we can see how enthusiastic and intelligent the students are. We can actually bring the best out of them, if we have the correct method, technique, guide to train the students. We can see that since February/ March this year, the students were trained using Active Learning (AL), Cooperative Learning (CL) and Cooperative Problem Based Learning (CPBL). The product from this program is a more confident students equipped with imperative soft skills. Hence, more program such as this must be developed and organized. Massive supports from the authority and schools as well as the experts ensured the success of this program.
