SYNOPSIS
This course enables students to understand the basic concept of combustion and related calculations as well as to expose them to the concept of flame, explosion, and detonation and its related safety aspects. In addition, it permits students to explain the use of gaseous fuels and its related energy generating technologies and equipment. The important concept and methods of fuel inter-changeability will be also discussed.
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Explain the fundamental knowledge of combustion including basic terminologies, formation/destruction mechanism and parameters and related properties and compare the fundamental difference between solid, liquid and gas combustion
- Perform combustion calculations and analyse combustion performance involving various types of fuel.
- Explain the fundamental concept of fuel inter-changeability, perform and compare gas burner conversion calculations using different methods
- Explain basic definitions of flame, flame types and mechanisms, flame related properties and relate the effects of various flame stabilization techniques on combustion performance and pollutants formation.
- Explain basic definitions of explosion , explosion types and mechanisms and important explosion related properties
- Compare the fundamental differences of combustion, flame and explosion in terms of formation mechanism, properties and safety considerations.
- Explain the various uses and factors affecting the use of natural gas components in domestic, residential and commercial sectors
- Identify and describe energy generating equipment used in each sector of natural gas utilization including some commercially available technologies.
- Evaluate the use and performance of various combustion technologies with respect to environmental issues
- Work as a team to participate in a wide range of group assignments and projects.
