Day 214 Task – Strategizing, Organizing and Preparing for My Next Book

Home sweet home! Alhamdulillah finally we reached home and I managed to perform Magrib prayer at Surau Al-Taqwa. I realized there are many things playing around in my head with regards to all my jobs, tasks and projects. I need to properly plan everything and this include my book writing project which is always lingering in my mind but not well planned yet for the time being. This project is related to this 366 Official Tasks that I am recording in this blog.

Unlike other years, this year we have 366 days and the phrase “366 days” will definitely be part of the title of the book. The intention or objective of the book is to share with my readers what are the typical tasks that a typical lecturers like me do on a daily basis. Many thought that a lecturer duty is similar like a teacher at school where their prime task is to teach their students. This is no longer the case as a lecturer has more than that to do. Briefly, I can say that a lecturer will have 7P’s, and the P’s are all described in Malay language as:

  1. Pengajaran (Teaching)
  2. Penyelidikan (Research)
  3. Penerbitan (Publication)
  4. Penulisan (Writing)
  5. Perundingan (Consultancy)
  6. Penyeliaan (Supervision)
  7. Perkhidmatan Masyarakat (Community Service)

However, throughout the recent years, I can say that we can add 2 more P’s and they are:

  1. Pengurusan (Management)
  2. Penjanaan Pendapatan (Income generation)

But the additional 2p’s depends on the position of the lecturer. This topic wil be continued soon. Stay tune.

About

There are without doubt numerous career for a chemical engineering graduate. One can be a chemical engineer, process engineer, environmental consultant, Safety officer, service engineer, researcher and also an academician. Each and every career has its own story, its own challenges, its own mystery, its own excitement and its own downfall. Nevertheless each career can be very rewarding if you have the right attitude to your job.

This book is a true share account of my 366 day to day career as an academician in the year 2020. The idea prompted instantaneously as the new year of 2020 appeared. I wanted to record what are the kind of tasks that a chemical engineering lecturer does. But in general, the sharing are almost the same for other lecturers from other disciplines. Since I am a chemical engineering lecturer, my sharing will and can be related to chemical engineering enthusiast. But, to be frank, other audiences such as those who are interested to know what a typical lecturer do can read this book.

Many perceive that a lecturer job is merely teaching and lecturing. The actual fact is indeed more than meet the eyes. A lecturer has more than that do serve the community and country in terms of developing the younger generation as well as contributing ideas, knowledge to the advancement of technology. Depending on the kind of university the lecturer works, we can describe how they work. More or less it is almost the same, but the slight difference may be due to the direction and status of the university.

Research University

In Malaysia, there are a total of 5 Research University status which are Universiti Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Universiti Putra Malaysia. These universities are given special task which is to rapidly perform in the research area. I am not sure about other universities, but for UTM, the key performance indicator (KPI) for research is 50% if the lecturer opted for research stream.

What does this 50% of research area means?

It means the lecturer need to lead research projects, be a member of research projects, spend for research purpose, supervise undergraduate, master and phd students, write and publish journal papers, write book chapter or/and book, present research in conferences or symposiums, and so on. Failure to perform in this or inability to score in any of the above mentioned areas will result to the KPI for research be zero and there vaporize your 50% marks.

The balance 50% which is left is shared between teaching loads, consultancy, community services and so on.

Day 192 Task – Master Thesis Correction Review

As an internal examiner to Dr. Muhammad Tahir’s Student which I became earlier this February 2020, I have to check and approve his improvement and correction made in his dissertation. I took some time to review and check the correction made of his thesis titled “PHOTOCATALYTIC WATER SPLITTING OVER TITANIUM ALUMINIUM CARBIDE ASSISTED RUTHENIUM WITH GRAPHITIC CARBON NITRIDE FOR HYDROGEN PRODUCTION”.

Day 190 Task – Reviewed Multiple Manuscripts for Conferences and Journals

Since I have received a lot of invitation to review manuscripts from various conferences and journals, and to not all of those get pending and accumulated, I decided to do all reviews that I have up till today once and for all. And because of that I first half of the day, just to for reviewing all manuscripts invitations.

At the end of the day, I managed to review the following:

  1. BCREC Journal – 1 manuscript
  2. Fuel Journal – 1 manuscript
  3. ICOST2020 Conference – 1 manuscript
  4. RCEE2020 Conference -3 manuscript (I’m a PC member)

Plant Design Project (PDP) Discussion via Whatsapp Text and Audio

We just have to make full use of what we have and what we can do during this trying time. Hence, for the PDP discussion, I kept on discussing and get updates from my team via Whatsapp. For today, I started to evaluate their Critical Thinking and Problem Solving (CTPS) Skills, which I conducted using Whatsapp. Only if I have further questions, I will asked by making video whatsapp calls or Zoom session. I still have 3 more students to check on their CTPS work, Plant Description and Innovation.

Ibnu Sina Institute Seminar Series – 79: Artificial Intelligence & Big Data

Dr Afnizanfaizal Abdullah, Deputy Director, UTM Big Data Centre. One day I would like to connect chemical engineering with artificial intelligence. InsyaAllah.

Day 58 Task – Facilitator for Scholarly Writing Education Engineering Research Workshop

6 Reasons you (as an engineering educator) should write scholarly papers in Engineering Education:

1. Critical reflection of own practice.
2. Improve practice through reading, reflecting and reviewer feedback.
3. Document and disseminate practice.
4. Inspire others toward innovative practice.
5. Enhance knowledge and spark new ideas.
6. Establish expertise.

Points above were highlighted by the Director of Center for Engineering Education (CEE) during the workshop today. It is indeed very true. I felt and experience it. I reflected and continuously improved my teaching techniques.

… and if you keep on consistently writing scholarly engineering education papers, publish them, together with your team, you will get more…more…and more…

It will be very rewarding. You will be killing 5 or more birds with one stone. Think about it 😉

Day 39 Task – Reviewing Manuscript for BCREC Journal

I spent some time to review a manuscript assigned to me by editor from Bulletin of Chemical Reaction and Catalysis (BCREC). The review was my 15th review since I started reviewing manuscript under BCREC few years ago. It is a very interesting and amazing experience since I can read other researcher’s idea in research, especially in the same research niche as myself.

One day, perhaps somewhere this year, I intend to submit a paper in this journal myself. InsyaAllah. And one day, I hope I can be an editor for this journal.

New Paper Published for 2020 in CET – Development of Sulphonated Sago Pith Waste Catalyst for Esterification of Palm Fatty Acid Distillate to Methyl Ester

Alhamdulillah, this paper has been published in Chemical Engineering Transaction Journal (CET) 2020. This is the work performed by my Master Student, Zarifah Zailan. InsyaAllah she will submit her thesis somewhere in April 2020. Pray for her.
