Day 175 Task – Miscellaneous: AJEE Management, Checking Student’s Thesis/Progress Report…

The weekend break at Kuantan recently has increased and accumulated my official tasks. So, today I have to be very organized in dealing and settling all this tasks. This post is written in the morning (7.30am), not as other posts which were written at the end of the day. This is because after this I want to focus on crossing / ticking those tasks as DONE, DONE and DONE. I know I cannot possibly complete all the tasks, but I hope and wish to complete a huge chunk of the tasks. God please ease and help me to do this. Amin.

Here are some of the pending tasks:

  1. Review Paper PG student #2
  2. Review Paper PG student #3
  3. Review my own glycerol paper
  4. Manage AJEE journal
  5. Edit and upload CEE video
  6. Follow up and manage PSM students
  7. Discuss PhD matter with a potential PhD student
  8. Update PDP
  9. Marking GSA assignments
  10. Marking Master Safety quiz, test and assignments

Day 174 Task – Chemical Engineering Career Session with Final Year Student Rep

Today, after lunch break, I had a 2.5 hour long recorded webex session on chemical engineering career talk. There final year chemical engineering students (Zulhilmi, Sufi Sazmin and Izzati) were invited to ask me any  questions regarding chemical engineering career and industry as they are going to graduate soon. I received many interesting questions but Alhamdulillah I managed to respond to all questions. At the end, all three students were satisfied and they have no more questions to ask me, which i felt is a good thing as all matters have been clarified.

Day 173 Task – Home Sweet Home – Reviewed Journal of Energy and Safety Technology (JEST)

Today we returned to our home and Johor Bahru relatively earlier than the usual time that we always did. As a result we arrived safely also relatively earlier which was about 3.15pm. It’s really good to arrive earlier. The speed of internet at our own house is far better than we had in Kuantan and because of that I can complete more or my official tasks.

One of the task that I found in my email inbox is to review a short manuscript from Journal of Energy and Safety Technology (JEST). It is quite an interesting manuscript so I decided to have a quick review at night. Alhamdulillah the review process took nearly 2 hours and i successfully managed to submit my comments and suggestion to the editor.

Day 172 Task – Still Taking a Break – Balik Kampung

This is the second full day of us in Kuantan (the continuity of yesterday), just staying there and relaxing. I visited this house which was under construction with my kids. The house architecture seems very interesting and intriguing. It does not look like any typical Malaysia house. Ikhwan who is going to be an architect should have a look at this house and I brought him to view the house. Both of us seems to be quite amazed with this incomplete house design and architecture.

Taking a break is very important to refresh, rejuvenate and reflect all our activities. It has been a good productive weekends in terms of relaxation.

Day 171 Task – Take a Break – Balik Kampung

After 3 months not going back to our Kampung at Kuantan, it is finally the perfect time since the MCO have been lifted. I took this opportunity to take a break from all work, all task. Time to sit, relax and enjoy the different environment.

Day 169a Task – Reviewing Manuscript for ICOST2020

I was appointed by ICoST 2020 Conference committee to review a manuscript which deals something about catalysis and reaction engineering, which is basically my expertise. I took the time today to review the manuscript and I found it can be actually improved further to make it a better and quality manuscript. But, a lot of work need to be done by the authors. I have submitted my review and presented my comments and concern. Luckily so far, I only have one manuscript from ICoST 2020 to review, but if there is more, I will happily help.

Day 169 Task – CEE FB Live Stream HOW TO GET ONLINE STUDENTS ACTIVELY ENGAGED

Early in the morning, this is the one important live webminar that I joined and participated with. Amazing!!!

📚CEE UTM Webinar Series📚 🔎

HOW TO GET ONLINE STUDENTS ACTIVELY ENGAGED

🔎 Extensive research has shown that people learn best by doing things and reflecting on what they have done, not by watching and listening to someone else telling them what they are supposed to know. While a good lecture can motivate and instruct students, if lecturing is the only thing that happens in a class, much less learning takes place than would occur if more active teaching methods were mixed in.

Methods for getting students actively engaged in traditional face-to-face classes have been developed and shown to be effective in hundreds of studies. Getting students actively engaged in online classes poses unique challenges, however, and methods for doing it are in a much lower state of development. This webinar outlines several of them and offers suggestions for making them effective.

Learning Outcomes:

After participating in the webinar, you will be able to answer the following questions:

-What is online active student engagement?

-What forms might it take?

-Which of those forms are most likely to effectively promote students’ learning?

-What specific online engagement strategies have been found effective in synchronous and asynchronous online courses?

-What conditions should be in place in online instruction regardless of which specific engagement strategies are adopted?

Day 168a Task – Final Plant Design Presentation Evaluation

Today, we had this Final Plant Design Presentation Evaluation. The evaluators were PM Dr. Norasikin Othman, Dr. Hashim Hassan, Dr. Saharuddin Haron and myself. Team 6, 7 and 8 were the teams that we evaluated starting from 2pm to 4pm. They were the same teams that we evaluated for the interim presentation as well. I have recorded the presentation via webex and below is the video for Team 6. I haven’t prepared videos from Team 7 and 8.
