Screeching Annoying Alarm in the Faculty

Today’s story… (in history… 🙂 )

For me it’s historical. Never ever I had experienced this, but I am now, as I am holding this new position.

While I was attending this MKKH workshop Bilik Mesyuarat Fakulti (BMF) in the morning, the fire drill / alarm triggered. Well, it’s another noisy fire drill, I whispered in my heart. I continued my work or rather preparing for the workshop that is about to commence.

Then suddenly, someone, I forgot who, yelled to me, “Zaki, the alarm is ringing, stop it…“.

I responded, “Why me?

He answered, “You’re the Facility Manager“…

Oh gosh! Yep… So, this is included in my job scope as well? I gulped. Well… here it goes. I checked what to do. Checked the fire alarm panel which happened to be just outside BMF. It’s a huge panel with so many LED indicators linking to so many spaces/rooms in the block (N-01). The light which was intermittently blinking signaled the source of problem was on the 1st floor. Problem is is I don’t know which part of 1st floor.

Then, I turned to the chief clerk (CC), Puan Roziah, which we all refer as Kak Gee. I asked her assistance to contact PHB to come and stop the freaking annoying alarm. Earlier, I also attempted to call the person in charge but that person could not be reached. Since I am supposed to be in the MKKH workshop, I then just asked Kak Gee’s help to keep on trying to call PHB. Then I left and started touring the 1st floor, checking if there is any fire or smoke or something that may have triggered the alarm. I notice nothing. I walked back to BMF, continued the MKKH workshop.

Few minutes after that, the alarm stopped! YES! I bounced from my sit and check out the panel. A guy casually dressed was there, about to close the alarm panel window door. I asked him, “What’s wrong…?

He responded, it could be anything. Sometimes, due to spider… haha…

I requested that we have a key for the alarm panel door, just in case, the alarm triggered again. He gave it to me and that’s good. I passed it to the CC. So, next time, if the alarm triggered again, we can stop it earlier.

That’s a good progress 🙂 I think…

My Chemical Engineering Experiences #1

A student asked an experienced engineer a question: “From your years of experience, what is the worse problem that you have encountered?”

The engineer answered, “I cannot specify one because there are too many problems, but I can say that 90% of the problem is from/when dealing with human/people”.

This implies that many problems are not from the technical or engineering aspects but originates from human. Think about it…

Semi Final – UTM Inter Departmental Soccer Tournament

2016-bola-semi-finalYesterday, FCEE team played as per schedule versus Pendaftar (Registrar) at the SEMI FINALS 🙂 [Refer to our earlier Quarter Final match]. As usual, the game took place at KDOJ football field. The atmosphere was just like the day before, warm and dry afternoon, unlike our first game where it was gloomy and wet. We

Result

FCEE lost the match. 1-4.

I played the right back position from the kick-off. This was a no joke game. This Pendaftar team comprises of majority UTM players. We only have 1 UTM team player. Pendaftar players were fast, organized and most “young”! Imagine a 40 year old man like me chasing a 23-30 something age player running on the field. I cannot cope. I could not catch them. Eventually, both of my feet get so stressed out that I cannot run or walk properly towards the end of the first half. As soon as the half time whistle was blown, I limped slowly to our player-manager, Dr. Zainul, and requested to be replaced. I cannot run and play anymore.

What does the result means now?

Our journey for soccer success stopped. We could not proceed to the final because we were defeated by a team far better than us. It’s OK. Few years ago, we were badly thrashed 0-7 by Pendaftar. So, 1-4 is still a good result for us. Fortunately, all players will receive a 3rd place medal, since we reached up to this semi-final stage. That’s a huge and blessing relief. Never that our football team ended at the semi final.

Let’s try again and do our best next year.

Quarter Final – UTM Inter Departmental Soccer Tournament

2016-bola

Yesterday, FCEE team played as per schedule versus Chancellery. The game took place at KDOJ football field. It was a warm and dry afternoon, unlike our first game where it was gloomy and wet.

Result

FCEE won the match. 3-1.

As usual, I played the right back position. However, this time I played in the second half because I arrived late. Well, actually based on my age, I planned to play less due to lack of stamina and lack of fitness. I believed I played around 15-20 minutes, but it felt like it was forever….haha…

What does the result means now?

We proceed to the semi final. We will battle Pendaftar, a very strong team and the regular champion of the tournament for the past several years. But we should not be that nervous. We will try to relax and play our game calmly with discipline. Wish us luck ok!

2 Certificates in 1 Week

chem-eng-certificateIt’s good to have some surprises once in a while rather than facing the same daily, weekly and monthly routine. Earlier this week on Sunday, I attended Citra Karisma 2015 where I became the finalist for the Webometric Award (Individual Category). There was no intention of winning since I started writing on this site since December 2014. It’s a rather young website to be regarded as finalist in this category. I am just happy to be one of the finalist and I was awarded a certificate of appreciation on my contribution for the Webometric Award. Yes, the winner was someone else. Still, I left Dewan Sultan Iskandar a happy guy.

Then today, arriving early at work, I found another certificate in my pigeon hole. This time it’s a nice colourful beautiful certificate in front of me – “Malaysia TRIZ Certificate Practitioner”. It’s really great feeling getting all those certificate although in actual fact it is actually not a big deal. The cert is given to me after successfully passing the 1st level of TRIZ training in March 2015.

These 2 certificates will be later united with my other compilation of certificates. I may want to consider hanging some of them on the walls. What do you think?

Happy New Year 2015
