FRGS oh FRGS

I admit that I am a bit “slow” to catch up with technology and whatsnot. But, I challenge myself to improve my teaching to incorporate online assessment and also more interactive class notes in my class. After all, the quiz in Kahoot! or Quizziz has this interactive features that I could not provide if I use paper-and-pencil test. For my class notes, I find that Prezi has this unique features. It is almost like a game in itself as students can choose to pick which bubble that they want to uncover first.
Here are some of the class notes that I have using Prezi

I don’t give quiz as part of the course requirement for my MPPE 1353 Personality Psychology class, but I give students options to self-assess their understanding. Since they are adult learners, they use this as an opportunity to improve their learning and enhance their learning experiences. Some of them are teachers so when they have experiential learning using Kahoot! or Quizziz, they have an idea about how to incorporate online assessment in their class as well.

I learned about Gamification back in 2016. But, I was really struggling back then to learn using online assessment such as Kahoot!, Quizziz and others. For my class note, I struggle to use Padlet and Prezi.

I first came across Kahoot! in my Educational Psychology class from one of the group presentations by my SPPP 1012 Educational Psychology students back in 2016. Yep. I learned about Kahoot! from them. Not long after that, I attended a workshop about gamification. Only then I learn more about gamification and various types of online assessments.
Since then, I have started to create quizzes using Kahoot! or Quizziz. Here are some of the quizzes that I use in my class.

Here are some of the class notes that I have used several semesters but I only recently converted it into Prezi notes (pssstt… I paid USD60 for Prezi annual fees) to have more choices of interactive settings.

Here are some of the quizzes that I have used over several semesters. There are other quizzes that I set as private because it might relate to certain articles that I use in class. The ones that I list here are generic version.
For MPPU1024 Research Methodology in Education, here are some of the quizzes that students can take

My plan was to take a leave to celebrate my birthday with my family today. But I had few things that I had to settle today so I ended up of not taking a leave. But I had this terrible stomachache because I drank fresh milk before I slept yesterday. It “cleansed” my bowel alright.
After the MPPU1070 evaluation ended around 10am, I went to the office to submit the evaluation form. On my way, I met Yan. I told her that today is my birthday and she decided to give me a treat. Since it was still early, our plan to eat at the newly renovated Arked Meranti was shifted to SDS.
I had an embarrassing moment today when one of the waitresses at SDS brought a cake with candles and singing Happy Birthday to me. What!!!! At this age, I feel cringed rather than elated about it. Come on! I am already passed 40 and the last thing I want is to blow candles on my birthday. But I appreciate my colleague who wants to give me a surprise because she knows very well that I am not into that kind of festivities. Thanks for the thought and kind act. She squealed in delight when she saw my cringed face listening to the birthday song sang by the waitress.
I aim to take a leave next year on my birthday. I need to make a day to unwind from works and whatsnot.
It is never my intention to torture my students with Round Robin activity this semester which I conducted more than twice. But, the thing is they are future teachers. I hope through experiential learning, they would remember how they go through the process of this activity. Hope they would store the information in procedural memory and episodic memory (there are steps involved that they have to go through i.e. relate to procedural memory as well as event where they go through i.e. related to the activity itself).
I had a blast with this group of students. Few of them took my Personality Psychology class before. When I asked them why they took my Human Development class, they said that they want to learn from me. They enjoy taking my class. What a bluff! That is my first impression. I know that I should trust my students but due to previous experiences, I still have some reservation when they give me sugar-coated compliment.
One of them suggested that we took a class picture. This is not what I normally do in class. I feel cringed (you can see it from my face). But for the sake of group dynamics, I played along with their request.
9 December 2019 (Monday). It was the final day for our Free Meal and Free Market programme for this semester. It has been 48 weeks since it was launched back in 2016 (errr, not officially launched though :D) and around 5000 students were benefited with the free meal. How time flies!
But this time around, we ended it with a bang. Yup. The newly elected Dean, Prof Zaidatun Tasir invited the press to come and you can know more about our programme HERE.
Two of the grandkids were in town last week. Since their Embah was busy with other things, I took a leave to entertain them. So, I sent them for horse back riding session at Equine Park, UTM.
Other than horse riding session, I want them to have a hands-on activity. Mind you. These two kids know how to play online games (I don’t even know how to play online games and I am older than them). Their Embah was not around. So, to keep them occupied, we baked brownie cookies. The recipe is HERE. But I improvised a bit by adding dark chocolate and left-over Whittard hot chocolate. I used some nearly expired stuff. Alhamdulillah it turned out ok
I am a novice in active learning. I have tried jigsaw, think-pair-share, 2 minutes paper and STAD (student-teams achievement division). I challenge myself to learn a new cooperative learning strategy this semester. I choose Gallery Walk (well, I also use Carousel but that one is for poster evaluation).
When I google about Carousel , I find so many versions of it. But the bottom line is, Carousel is a strategy that you use WHEN you want to “semi-force” each individual student to take turn in giving their opinion/answer/response and they “have” to share it with others. Ideally, 4 to 5 students per group.
But in my case, I used Gallery Walk for my PG class. They are more matured students so the whole class is considered as one group. But in this case, I increase the number of questions (each question is position in one station) so they can move around to answer the questions at their own pace and preference. There is no compulsion or assignment of which station would be their first station. They can start at any station to give their response.
