E-Content: Tips that I get from my colleagues

Yesterday, the UTMLead organized a session conducted by Assoc Prof Dr Mohd Nihra Haruzuan about E content.  I was a bit late because I had a meeting with the Chair earlier.

Alhamdulillah I managed to join the session before it was ended.  There are some tips that I managed to pick up from those who managed to get 5 marks for their e-content.  Here are the tips:

1) Diversify your e content materials.

Make sure that you add a variety of materials for your e-content.  Variety does not mean a lot.  So, if you add only ONE material that worth 5 marks, you can get 5 marks.  If you add 5 materials that worth 1 mark each, you will only get 1 mark.

So, why wasting your time to upload 5 materials which equivalent to 1 mark?  On top of that, you can only claim one material once in your e content.  Meaning, once you have submitted for the material to be evaluated in your e content, you cannot submit it again on the following years EXCEPT if you make some changes like adding more information and such.

Moral of the story:  you need to diversify your materials which belong to different categories of e content materials that carry different weightage of marks to get 5 marks.

For example, add 1 Powerpoint notes with your voice (it is considered as a receptive material.  1 mark).   A Powerpoint notes with your voice recorded is considered as receptive material because the students do not interact with the material.  They just watch and listen to your recorded material, in this case.

For 2 marks material, you need to add the element of “having a linkage with another source” such as you link a video within your note or you have animation in your normal Powerpoint note. But, please bear in mind, if you add a video in your Powerpoint notes, the size of the file would be large.  If you add a video in your Powerpoint notes (with recorded voice), and later on you save it as MP4, the size of the file would also be large.

Other than Powerpoint notes,  you can add another material like Gamification by using Quizziz or Kahoot! in which students need or have the chance to interact with the media.  When you use Quizziz or Kahoot!, you create a question (you can add picture in your question) that prompt students to answer it.  Answering your questions is an example of interaction that students have with the material, which is in this case, Quizziz.  For this kind of materials, you get 3 marks (interactive-basic).

If Quizziz or Kahoot! alone, it is considered as interactive on one to one basis.  So, it might be considered as 3 marks [but based on my own experience, I only got 2 marks for this so, I clearly do not understand how the rubric works as it might depend on the evaluator (REALLY!)] .  So, do not blame me if I have misconception about e-content as I still remember what it was said in one of the sessions “Terpulang kepada penilai nak beri markah berapa“.

For 4 marks, you need to make sure there are elements of interaction which is linked either internally or externally.  I have no idea about an example of this.  But basically, for 3-4 marks, there are the elements of students interaction with the material which the interaction is one to one basis (student –> material), not involving the interaction with another students for brainstorming ideas, responses or answers. Don’t ask me further about the examples of materials that fall under this category (4 marks).  But, I would like to experiment with a material that I created this semester.  A video that I uploaded on Youtube.

Note:  When I created the video, I thought about what are the elements of interaction that I can inject in the video?  One of my colleagues suggested that perhaps I added a question or two at the end of the video.  I tried to find more information and examples from Youtube.  I found several examples of videos which use Powerpoint with audio i.e. voice which have questions and students or others who watch the video can leave answer on the comment box.  Interesting, isn’t it?  But I don’t know if this material would be considered as 4 marks category.  There is no harm in trying, right?  So, I will try it this year.  I will let you know the results next year, In shaa Allah.

For 5 marks, you have to make sure that there are the elements of cooperative learning in which students are able to discuss with one another through the material (e content material) that we provide them with.  A good example that I could think of is, Padlet (make sure you set it as public viewing).   Padlet is a platform for the interaction to occur with materials that you provide in the Padlet.  It is like a one-stop-centre where you can put your material, questions for students to answer and discuss.

In a Padlet page or worksheet or whatever you may call it, to make sure you can create the situation in which students can interact with materials and discuss with one another make sure you have the following:

a) Give clear instructions that require students to use the materials that you/other students provide.  It could be reading materials such as a short article or it could be a video.  Put that in your Padlet.  In addition, instruct your students to read other person’s answer (response) and give their view/ opinion about that – this will create a discussion indirectly.

b) Post questions that prompt students to answer based on what they have read (if it is reading material) or watched (if it is a video).

c)  Emphasis the importance of giving comment/ response to other person’s answer in a given box (you can set a column or box for students to leave a comment underneath another column or box).

d) Make sure you monitor the discussion and give your comment or feedback through the Padlet or when you have a synchronous class.  There you go.  5 marks!

Note: When I first posted this post, it was the second week of the semester.  So, even though I have prepared a Padlet with questions and whatsnot, I did not have the complete version yet because it lacks of students’ feedback and interaction.  Alhamdulillah, I manage to get the students to give their answers and such on Week 3.  So, here is the example of a Padlet which contains the following:

a) Materials that students can refer to (I gave students a Prezi note and two articles that they need to read before answering the questions that I posed).  I use external materials in this case.  Other than the articles, I linked my Prezi note.  [How about others who have limited internet connectivity who cannot view the Prezi note through online?  Since it is a paid version that I use so I also gave the students the PDF version as an alternative to the online version on the ELearning and our class Telegram].

b) Questions that prompt students to give their answers.  For the Padlet, I set the setting in which students not only can read others’ answers but also can reply or response to others’ answers and such.  So, it has the elements of discussion – but it is done virtually.

So, there you go!  You can have a cooperative learning technique such as Buzz Group.  In a normal case, you have to limit the number of students in one group for this activity.  But, since we need to conduct our class virtually and due to internet constraints that might be experienced by some, we can allow the students to respond with limited time frame.  Why limited?  This is to ensure the students will not take more than a few days to give their response.

2) Be creative.

3) Make sure the materials are YOURS.

4) Don’t be afraid to experiment with a new thing

How to change your writing for TESDCP (Self-Assessment and Reflection)?

In the Self-Assessment and Reflection part, there are 4 things that you need to fill in: 1) Goals of student learning, 2) Personal philosophy, 3) Belief and practices of assessment and evaluation, and 4) Self-reflection of teaching development over time

However, you need to make at least 20% change every single year (I know, it might drive you crazy.  But, let’s remain cool, calm and collected).  In my case, what I did is I change only some parts of the previous writing.

For this year, due to COVID-19, I use this sentences to show the 20% difference

“Due to covid-19, even though my teaching philosophy does not change much since last year, I realise that …..

“Due to covid-19 even though the goal of student learning remains the same yet for this year, I emphasise …..

How to write teaching philosophy for UTM TESDCP?: 2020 Version

What a buzz!  I was elected as a facilitator to assist others on how to write teaching philosophy.  My first reaction was “What a heck!  Armed with a PhD and yet we need someone to assist us to write our own teaching philosophy?” Sound negative, right?

Well, personally, I feel like a fake or impostor or fraud when I am entrusted and assigned as a facilitator.  “Oh come on!  Who am I to assist my highly esteemed colleagues with vast knowledge and experience to write their teaching philosophy.”

When I write my teaching philosophy, I write it from my heart and soul (of course I use my brain to think about the wording).  How can I assist others to write their own teaching philosophy?  We are different in so many ways.  Some are even better teachers/instructors/supervisors than me.  My passion for teaching is different from them too.  In short, they could be a better educator and more passionate about teaching than me.

How on earth am I going to assist them?  Don’t you think that I am a fake.  What a baloney!

But here are some of the things that I use as a guideline to write my teaching philosophy.  The guideline is taken from the headings on TESDCP.   In short, just write from your heart based on each category.  There are four categories:1) Goals of Student Learning, 2) Personal Philosophy, 3) Belief and Practices of Assessment and Evaluation and 4) Self-reflection of Teaching Development over time and how this relates to future goals.

I ask myself certain questions before I write each part.

1) Goals of student learning (Before you write this part, think about this question “What do you want your students to be and become?”,  “What kind of value that you want to inculcate and impart to them?”)

2) Personal Philosophy.  When I am writing this part, I emphasize on two points: Vision and Teaching Approach.

a. Vision as an educator (Before you write this part, think about this question “How do you see yourself as an educator?”  What is your perception about your roles as an educator?”)

b. Teaching approach (Before you write this part, think about this question “What do you normally do in class?  “What do you hope that your students will learn from the activities that you do in class or the assignment/task that you give to students?”)

3) Belief and Practices of Assessment and Evaluation (Before you write this part, think about this question “How do you assess your students?, How do you give feedback to students for improvement?”)

4) Self-reflection of Teaching Development over time and how this relates to future goals (Before you write this part, think about this question “How do you assess your teaching?” – it is not about relying on your students’ feedback or EPPP per se but on personal level, how do you assess yourself as an instructor/supervisor?”, “What are the things that have changed over certain period of time?”)

TESDCP or TES, here it comes again (2020)!

Ok.  Like last year, we have to fill in the TESDCP or TES (new label) again this year.  But unlike last year, the term that was used – “TESDCP”.  This year, it becomes TES (don’t be fool by the labelling). The things that you have to upload are still the same.

Wait, isn’t it the same with Teaching Excellence System?

Confused?  (Who doesn’t, right?)  But, don’t worry.  We are in this mess (uhuk uhuk) together.

How to differentiate between the new TES (old version it is known as TESDCP) and Teaching Excellence System (it is no longer called as TES now?)?

Based on my observation, the ONLY observable difference that I can see when I search both things from UTMPORTAL is the icon of TES and Teaching Excellence System.

The icon for Teaching Excellence System is a person pointing on a board.  This is the system where you can find your Blended Learning (this is from your ELearning), OBE, NALI & HIEPS and E-content.

The icon for TES has pictures of a mortar board, an apple, hands (holding or shaking), a light bulb and a science icon (on the center).

If you ask me why both are called the same i.e.  Teaching Excellence System?

I also asked the same question to some people but they also do not know the answer.  So, I don’t have any answer to that question.   I don’t want to speculate anything here.  Let’s somebody else do the thinking.

So, are both the same systems or different?

The label used is the same: Teaching Excellence System.  But clearly, both are different systems in which both have different information and things that you have to upload.

COVID-19: A tough time indeed for all of us

I was feeling a bit down because I realise how unemphatic people can be during this trial time.  Indeed.  I don’t expect to be understood with all the predicaments that I am facing at the moment, but being those with certain privileges do not give any of us the right to downgrade, belittle others on the predicaments they are experiencing.

It is frustrating at times but I guess each of us have so many things going on at the moment and all of us are struggling to deal with the challenges that we are facing and thus, it could lead us to appear as less emphatic at this moment.  This is the way I see it.

Some students PM (private message) me letting me know about the challenges that they face in other courses when their requests, needs and device capabilities are being ignored.  What does this has to do with me?   I am not teaching the course.  It is challenging to be the mediator and it might backfire at times.  But I know that I need to do something about it.

I try to ease their concerns the best I could.  Sometimes, all I do is just lending them my ears because I don’t know how to help them with the technical glitches that they experience (I am no expert in this myself).   After some time, I realise that all they need is someone who is willing to listen.  Someone they can share their burden.  It does not take much other than few minutes (or hours if you have large class like mine) to be a good listener.

But, being a listener to others and yet having little support myself does take a toll on me.  In adjustment psychology class which I took with Amber Hague, I learn that we have a choice to define the situation that we are experiencing.  In this case, I perceive this as a challenging situation.  It is temporal.  I might struggle to face it but it is ok.  I need to be aware about myself and things around me.   Whatever it is, Allah Will ease the path.  Being patience is rewarding.

One of my colleagues suggested that we need to do daily muhasabah.  To help me doing this activity, I ask my students to give comments about my teaching during this tough time.  Indeed.  We support each other to face this challenging time.

This could be one evidence for my TES (tongue in cheek remark)

Using Collaborative Tools and Gamification in my class (2019): MPPE 1353 Personality Psychology

I admit that I am a bit “slow” to catch up with technology and whatsnot.  But, I challenge myself to improve my teaching to incorporate online assessment and also more interactive class notes in my class.  After all, the quiz in Kahoot! or Quizziz has this interactive features that I could not provide if I use paper-and-pencil test.  For my class notes, I find that Prezi has this unique features.  It is almost like a game in itself as students can choose to pick which bubble that they want to uncover first.

Here are some of the class notes that I have using Prezi

I don’t give quiz as part of the course requirement for my MPPE 1353 Personality Psychology class, but I give students options to self-assess their understanding.  Since they are adult learners, they use this as an opportunity to improve their learning and enhance their learning experiences.  Some of them are teachers so when they have experiential learning using Kahoot! or Quizziz, they have an idea about how to incorporate online assessment in their class as well.

Here are some of the quizzes that I give to my students

Using Collaborative Tools and Gamification in my class (2019): SPPP 1012 Educational Psychology

I learned about Gamification back in 2016.  But, I was really struggling back then to learn using online assessment such as Kahoot!, Quizziz and others.   For my class note, I struggle to use Padlet and Prezi.

I first came across Kahoot! in my Educational Psychology class from one of the group presentations by my SPPP 1012 Educational Psychology students back in 2016.  Yep.  I learned about Kahoot! from them.  Not long after that, I attended a workshop about gamification.  Only then I learn more about gamification and various types of online assessments.

Since then, I have started to create quizzes using Kahoot! or Quizziz.   Here are some of the quizzes that I use in my class.
