Day 320 Task – Reading and Grading ITE-ISP Student’s Reflection Journal

We have 35 students in our ITE and ISP class. All of them are required to write 2 page Reflection Journal after 3 weeks of study. This is the first Reflection Journal that they write. There will be another 3 more till the end of the course.

Reading the students reflection journal is important and it is not as easy as reading a novel. We have to identify what they have learned and give marks accordingly, followed by providing constructive comments. The elements that we grade include the content, analysis, reflective thinking, evaluation and feedback. I always try to recall all of this point by its abbreviation = CAREF. These are derived from the Gibbs Reflective Cycle, which help people to learn from experiences.

Day 316 Task – Final Touch on the HTGYE book

I don’t have class today, but I have numerous list of tasks that I need to accomplish today. So far, my career as an academician is never at one time, i have nothing to do. There will always be many things to do and its a never ending job. Luckily I am enjoying all this. But sometimes, I felt overwhelm due to the bombardment of many tasks, deadlines etc. When that happen, I just need to stay cool, relax, take a break, reorganize and start prioritizing my tasks. Work on it one by one.

OK, as for today, I wanted to really finalized the HTGYE book project that I am assigned to. That’s the main thing. But, hey… let me just list down some of the tasks that I have listed in my exercise book:

  1. Finalized and submit Paper Student Z.
  2. Work on Paper Student N – Ch 4.
  3. Work on Paper Student N – Ch 5.
  4. Work on Paper Student N – Ch 7.
  5. Improve correction for Paper Student F.
  6. Manage claim to pay consumables for research.
  7. Settle and work out to top of log card payment for PPMU.
  8. Read research report prepared by my Engineering Education Phd student – 18 pages.
  9. Liaise and get feedback report from all my research students.
  10. To adjust ICLCA website to suit ICLCA2021 in Japan.
  11. Read, review Project description report for IEA report draft – Chapter 3.
  12. Manage and sign IEEE copyright agreement for your RCEE2020 paper.
  13. Manage agreement for FRGS research grant.

Well, those are among the tasks that I can list here. There are more, but hey, it’s not my duty to reveal all that I need to do here. Leave some for my privacy. OK, all the best to you and me. Good luck.

Day 315 Task – ITE Class

I literally didn’t have my weekend, mainly because of the massive preparation and conducting the Pesisir MKKH1513 class since Thursday till Sunday. But, I am very happy and excited with my new experience.

And now is a Monday and again, I have to prepare for the ITE class took place just now at 11am-1pm. I had a brief phone call discussion with Dr. Siti Hajjar, my partner for ITE class. One of the most important thing is that we clearly decided on the time line for what we are going to cover in class. The time line is very important for me because without it, I will be lecturing and telling a lot of story to the students…. haha…. But this time, I cannot do that, and in fact I realized I did not have sufficient time to clearly explain to the students the concept of CPBL before we threw away to them the mosquito case study in Uganda.

Many things have to be accomplished in this class that include breaking the students into their teams for them to prepare PR and PI, for them to practice. We hope the students will be able to prepare the new PR and PI for Stage 1 problem that was revealed to them in class yesterday. InsyaAllah.

Among other things that were done today include checking the students engineering ethics assignment, small group meeting with CEE director and assistant director on some decision making stuffs. Also some brief follow up and consultation with my research students. We also had a webex meeting with Salman, a new phd student doing progressive free cystallization where I am the co-SV, while my other half is the main SV. The design prepared by Salman is very interesting and he really thought of every detail. This definitely can be patented, provided everything is right, ok to go and the objective is achieved.

InsyaAllah.

Day 314 Task – Master Environmental Class Day 2

Today is the second day of the 9 to 5 MKKH1513 class. In order to plan and prepare for this class, I have to stay up late until 2.30am. I completely prepared a new set of presentation slide for the Sustainability, Sustainable development and also Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) slide. I also rehearsed the slide with my other half to ensure the videos that I wanted to play during class will be smooth, unlike the disaster that I had with Dr. Siti Hajjar during our ITE class presentation on Sunday, 6 days ago.

The tricky part of the preparation for the class is designing how to run the class. I only successfully managed to think and decided the approach at 11.30pm the day before, that’s 9 hours plus before the actual class started. Being a lecturer who have some background experiences on student centered learning kind of induced me to have a different style of teaching and I want it to be very effective for the student. It’s a a long class and if the method of teaching is a conventional style, it will be very difficult to engage with the students and to get them follow through the class.

Alhamdulillah the class, in my opinion was fruitful at the end, eventually. Instead of asking students to key in padlet like yesterday, I asked them to write a reflection on what they have learned from Saturday and Sunday class. I also asked them to prepare a timeline of all the regulations, acts, declaration, summits etc that happen international regarding international laws related to environment. I really hope the student gained new environmental management knowledge from this class. amin.

Day 313 Task: Master Environmental Management Class Day 1

The Master Environmental Management Class MKKH 1513 went well Alhamdulillah. This was my first time teaching a Pesisir Program on a Saturday  and tomorrow (a Sunday). I got to know there were 19 students altogether from 2 different batches (Semester 1 and Semester 3). All of them are presently working as professionals  and sacrificed their marvelous weekends to pursue their masters degree. The class commenced with getting to know each other, taaruf which took roughly 40 minutes. It’s important to get to know the students and see their faces, because we are conducting the teaching online and I could not see their faces. Subsequently, I explained about the course information.

I would like to thank Prof Zainura and Dr. Tuan Amran because they help me by providing notes and advices/tips, respectively. Thanks to Dr. Norafneeza who asked me to teach this course. Both of them and few more other lecturers have taught this course before, but for me, it’s my first. After the class, I asked the students to type in what they have learned today in Padlet (as per shown in the image above). The reason is simply so they can recall what they have studied today. You can see the content of Padlet here. I’m very delighted because the response from students were very positive after the class. It can be reflected from the Padlet, whatsapp group and personal whatsapp communication.

I just hope to share knowledge and guide the student to learn more about environmental management.
