Chocolate, anyone?

Every semester, I aim to do something new and learn at least one new thing.  I know some might say that I am capable to do or learn more than one thing but my aim is to do something or learn something new extremely well.  That is challenging.

I had a quick look at my Elearning before coming to my first undergraduate class today.  I noticed that there were three students who have “visited” my Elearning five days ago (5 February 2020).  At that time, Nihra told me that the Elearning was not that stable yet so I have to wait at least few days to start uploading materials and whatsnot.  I uploaded some materials on Friday (7 February 2020).

What should I do to reward the students who made such attempt to visit my Elearning?  I looked around my office.  Apparently, my junk food stock has “diminished” and all what left is the chocolate that one of my seniors gave me when she went to Jogjakarta last year.  An artisan chocolate.   So, I looked at the names again and wrote it down before I went to class.

As I started my class with introduction to the course, I remembered about those students.  So, I stopped my explanation for awhile and started to call their names.  They were shocked.  But I know that they are flattered as well.  Something that might has never happened to them before.  Who would care to reward a simple attempt of logging to the Elearning, right?

I reward them because it is unusual for students during their semester break to log in to Elearning, just to have a look at “what’s-new”.  Of course, it is related to the things we are going to discuss this semester.

This is not the chocolate that I gave them. They are not that lucky though (tongue in cheek remark)

  4. Introduction to Blended Learning
  5. Module 1-Course and User Setting
  6. Module 2-Development and Distribution of TL Materials
  7. Module 4-Assignment
  8. Module 5-Student Assessement Using Quiz

A session with the new Dean with the 40-50 years old academic staff

As far as I remember, this was the first time they organised a session with the dean based on specific category of age.  I can see familiar faces from ATI, LA, SOE and SHARPS.  There were around 20 of us who attended the session out of 75.  There were many of us who involved in another meetings and others.   There were some issues discussed.   The way I see it, the issues are things can be improved as long as we are willing to change it for the sake of Allah.  In Sha Allah FSSH will thriving under the new leadership.

 How can we assist you?

My Touch n Go card was blacklisted even though the status is still active

I took a break on 24 and 26 December so I had a quite long break.  So, today on my way to work using the highway, I was surprised when I cannot use my Touch n Go card which I recently topped up.  I had to buy a new card.  With a little bit hassle to make a complaint to the PLUS office, I asked why my card was blacklisted.  Since the person-in-charge cannot do anything about it because it relates to Touch n Go, not PLUS, I just topped up the new card with RM50.  The old one has more than RM150 worth of credit.  I googled Touch n Go office which is in Wisma Nufri at Jln Yahya Al Datar.  I am not sure how to go there since there are lots of one-way street and I have to detour a bit to get there.

Here, I have three options.

Option 1: Just let the matter rest without doing anything.  I know that I would waste that RM150 worth of credit.

Option 2: Make a report by calling the centre.  I am not sure how they will solve this problem.

Option 3: I will go to the JB centre myself after the examination.

Which is the best option?

I have been thinking about this for few hours since this little incident.  I notice that after I topped up my card on 9 December 2019, the credit is not accurate.  At first, I was thinking perhaps, I got a bonus or something so, I got extra credit more than what I had topped up.   So, I don’t do anything about it.  When this happened to me this morning, I realise that I am not being honest by not doing anything.  This thing happened as a way of Allah showing His Mercy upon me.   SubhanAllah.

I think I will choose option 1.  After all, I can always use the new card that I had topped up.  The extra credit of the old card?  After a quick calculation, I realise that it is not mine to claim on a first place even.

Prophet Muhammad warned us of the dangers of dishonesty, and the benefits of living in an honest way.  He said:

“Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise.  In addition, a man keeps on telling the truth until he becomes a truthful person.  Falsehood leads to wickedness and evil-doing, and wickedness leads to the (Hell) Fire, and a man may keep on telling lies till he is written before God, as a liar”. (Saheeh Al-Bukhari)

It is really tempting to claim the extra credit (which I don’t know the source) in my Touch n Go card, though the extra credit is not what I had paid when I topped up the credit.  But, I realise that it is challenging to stay honest and be truthful especially in this case.  Alhamdulillah and SubhanAllah for the chance given by Allah for me to look at this incident from different perspective.

Using Collaborative Tools and Gamification in my class (2019): MPPE 1353 Personality Psychology

I admit that I am a bit “slow” to catch up with technology and whatsnot.  But, I challenge myself to improve my teaching to incorporate online assessment and also more interactive class notes in my class.  After all, the quiz in Kahoot! or Quizziz has this interactive features that I could not provide if I use paper-and-pencil test.  For my class notes, I find that Prezi has this unique features.  It is almost like a game in itself as students can choose to pick which bubble that they want to uncover first.

Here are some of the class notes that I have using Prezi

I don’t give quiz as part of the course requirement for my MPPE 1353 Personality Psychology class, but I give students options to self-assess their understanding.  Since they are adult learners, they use this as an opportunity to improve their learning and enhance their learning experiences.  Some of them are teachers so when they have experiential learning using Kahoot! or Quizziz, they have an idea about how to incorporate online assessment in their class as well.

Using Collaborative Tools and Gamification in my class (2019): SPPP 1012 Educational Psychology

I learned about Gamification back in 2016.  But, I was really struggling back then to learn using online assessment such as Kahoot!, Quizziz and others.   For my class note, I struggle to use Padlet and Prezi.

I first came across Kahoot! in my Educational Psychology class from one of the group presentations by my SPPP 1012 Educational Psychology students back in 2016.  Yep.  I learned about Kahoot! from them.  Not long after that, I attended a workshop about gamification.  Only then I learn more about gamification and various types of online assessments.

Since then, I have started to create quizzes using Kahoot! or Quizziz.   Here are some of the quizzes that I use in my class.

Birthday bash… really?

My plan was to take a leave to celebrate my birthday with my family today.  But I had few things that I had to settle today so I ended up of not taking a leave.  But I had this terrible stomachache because I drank fresh milk before I slept yesterday.  It “cleansed” my bowel alright.

After the MPPU1070 evaluation ended around 10am, I went to the office to submit the evaluation form.  On my way, I met Yan.  I told her that today is my birthday and she decided to give me a treat.  Since it was still early, our plan to eat at the newly renovated Arked Meranti was shifted to SDS.

I had an embarrassing moment today when one of the waitresses at SDS brought a cake with candles and singing Happy Birthday to me.  What!!!!  At this age, I feel cringed rather than elated about it.  Come on!  I am already passed 40 and the last thing I want is to blow candles on my birthday.  But I appreciate my colleague who wants to give me a surprise because she knows very well that I am not into that kind of festivities.  Thanks for the thought and kind act.  She squealed in delight when she saw my cringed face listening to the birthday song sang by the waitress.

I aim to take a leave next year on my birthday.  I need to make a day to unwind from works and whatsnot.

Thanks Yan for the surprise.

The last round robin activity for this semester

It is never my intention to torture my students with Round Robin activity this semester which I conducted more than twice.  But, the thing is they are future teachers.  I hope through experiential learning, they would remember how they go through the process of this activity.  Hope they would store the information in procedural memory and episodic memory (there are steps involved that they have to go through i.e. relate to procedural memory as well as event where they go through i.e. related to the activity itself).

Please ignore the way they dress. After all, they are TEASLIAN. As you can see, they might have resemblance with LA lecturers too who teach them. An example of modelling (social learning) by Bandura in action. Indeed

Last day of my class….. errrr

I had a blast with this group of students.  Few of them took my Personality Psychology class before.  When I asked them why they took my Human Development class, they said that they want to learn from me.  They enjoy taking my class.  What a bluff!  That is my first impression.  I know that I should trust my students but due to previous experiences, I still have some reservation when they give me sugar-coated compliment.

One of them suggested that we took a class picture.  This is not what I normally do in class.  I feel cringed (you can see it from my face).  But for the sake of group dynamics, I played along with their request.

Only Izlan was absent.
