Dr. Shahabuddin Amerudin is a highly experienced Senior Lecturer at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, where he has served since 2001 as a Tutor, then as a Lecturer in 2004, and finally as a Senior Lecturer since 2015. Dr. Amerudin is a seasoned professional with a wealth of knowledge in the areas of Land Surveying and GIS, and he brings a diverse set of skills and expertise to his role as a teacher and researcher.

Dr. Amerudin began his educational journey at Sekolah Menengah Abdul Jalil (SMAJ), Hulu Langat, Selangor, where he obtained his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) in 1988. His passion for computers and programming languages started to grow in 1985 when he was introduced to basic computer skills.

Dr. Amerudin’s academic journey began at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, where he obtained a Diploma in Land Surveying in 1991, followed by a Bachelor Degree in Surveying (Geoinformatics) in 1999. During his undergraduate studies, he completed a thesis titled “Pembangunan Pangkalan Data GIS: Kes Kajian Terhadap Kualiti dan Ketepatan Sumber Data Daripada Cerapan GPS” under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Ghazali Desa and Prof. Dr. Abdul Majid Abdul Kadir.

Dr. Amerudin then went on to complete his Master of Science in Geographical Information Science from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom in 2004. His dissertation titled “Implementing Route Network Analysis in Web-Based GIS Using Minnesota MapServer” was supervised by Dr. Micheal McCullagh. In 2015, Dr. Amerudin received his Doctor of Philosophy in Geography (Science) from the same university, with a thesis titled “The Development of Visibility Trigger Region Techniques for Pedestrian Navigation on Mobile Devices.” His supervisors were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gary Priestnall and Prof. Dr. Mike Jackson, and his examiners were Dr. Jeremy Morley from the University of Nottingham and Dr. Glen Hart from Ordnance Survey, United Kingdom.

Before joining Universiti Teknologi Malaysia as an academician, Dr. Amerudin worked in the industry, holding positions as a Land Surveying Data Processing and Programmer at Landsoft Sdn. Bhd. from 1991 to 1996 and as a GIS Systems Analyst at the same company from 1997 to 2001. He has worked on many different projects, including building the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), the Airport Rail Link from KLIA to Kuala Lumpur, GIS data conversion, GIS systems development, and more.

Dr. Amerudin has published several research papers in conferences and journals around the world. His research interests include GIS analysis and modelling, Agent-Based Modelling (ABM), flood modelling, crime modelling, GIS application development on multiple platforms, and more. He is known for his dedication to mentoring and advising students at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has supervised and co-supervised numerous students in their research projects and theses, and his commitment to helping students succeed is well-known.

Dr. Amerudin is committed to advancing the use and application of GIS in solving real-world problems. He is enthusiastic about using new tools and technologies to develop innovative GIS solutions in the field of software and app development. As an active researcher and educator, Dr. Amerudin continues to contribute significantly to the field of GIS, and his work has made a substantial impact on the discipline.
