Day 260 Task – OBE Assessment Online Workshop with UNS (Part 2)

Today is the second day of the Part 2 Workshop with UNS. The first workshop on OBE can be read here (1st day) and here (2nd day). This second workshop was held from 14-15 September 2020. I was involved as one of the facilitators. The speakers for this session were Prof Khairiyah, Dr. Syed Helmy, Dr. Nurul Ahyam, Prof Fatin and Dr. Naziha.

Day 259b Task – Meeting my PSM and New PhD Student

Today is another super hectic day for me. From the early morning till after the office hours, I am fully occupied with numerous activities. But the one that I want to highlight today is my meeting with my new PhD student. He will be doing an experimental research about sago pith waste as a catalyst to produce biodiesel.

Day 258 Task – Research Methodology Book Project Meeting

The Faculty of Engineering has asked each schools under its umbrella to prepare and publish a research methodology book. For that purpose, we had a meeting which was held after lunch at Bilik Mesyuarat Fakulti N01 to discuss the matter and approach. The initial plan was a bit confusing for a lot of us and many have opted to wait for the meeting for deciding the best approach to write the research methodology according to everyone’s expertise.

After quite a lengthy discussion, we unanimously decide on one approach. We have roughly 5 weeks to prepare the chapter. InsyaAllah it is possible. We’ll do it.

Day 257 Task – Oil Storage Tank Detail Design Search

This is part of the Mathwork Grant Project which is to create a real case problem to be completed by engineering students. I was assigned to search for oil storage tank detail design. From it, we will create / simulate a real process control problem to provide student with real exposure on solving various problem from numerous engineering discipline: chemical engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering.

This will be an interesting and challenging tasks, but I am open to learn and considering it as an adventure. Pray for me…

Day 256 Task – UTM CEE Webminar Again with Prof Johannes Stroble

It’s an official off day for me, but early in the morning I have two major tasks to be accomplished. One is an online meeting on a Consortium Project which started at 8am. The meeting involved representatives from 3 universities: UTM, UPM and UTHM.

Subsequently after that, we had a live webminar session where I was once again the MC for the session.

CEE UTM WEBINAR SERIES DEMYSTIFYING PHILOSOPHY FOR ENGINEERING EDUCATORS

At first glance, Engineering and Philosophy seem to be on opposite sides of a spectrum of scholarship: Engineering as a discipline concerned with making decisions, solving problems, and designing. Philosophy as a discipline concerns with studying the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence. So what can philosophy bring to research and practice in engineering education? This webinar will provide an overview of different sub-disciplines of philosophy and show examples about their respective value and relevance in the deeper pursuit of engineering education research and the practice of educating engineers.

Prof. Dr. Johannes Strobel is a Full Professor at the University of Missouri where he leads a maker initiative and conducts research in engineering and STEM education. His research focuses on engineering and STEM learning through hands-on activities; defiance, empathy, care, and worldviews in engineering. Dr. Strobel has been PI, Co-PI, and key personnel of grants totaling $36,000,000 in the USA and Canada. He co-authored 160 papers and co-edited five books. Dr. Strobel is the lead designer of Hands-on Standards STEM in Action™️—a set of STEM learning modules for PreK-5th grades – in use in 35 countries and selected as a finalist for two international awards. Dr. Strobel received the 2018 Science Educator of the Year Award from the Academy of Science – St. Louis and the 2018 STEM Excellence Award from theInternational Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). Dr. Strobel founded the Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER).

Day 255 Task – Evaluator for IBD Industrial PhD Proposal

This is the first time I became an examiner or evaluator for PhD proposal for Institute Biotechnology Development (IBD). The PhD candidate, I have known before because I was one of his Master (MKKL) examiner too. The First stage was conducted online via Webex platform. I was the examiner together with Dr. Kamarizan Kidam. Prof Ani Idris was the Chairperson. The Supervisors were PM Dr. Wijaya and Dr. Harisun.

The session went well and I believed the comment given by us has given a clearer direction and strength for Tee’s Phd study. All the best!

Day 254 Task – With my PhD Student

Sometimes we need to help out and discuss with our phd student. I have asked her to sit in my office and focus on the remaining Chapter 7. Alhamdulillah, at the end of the day, she managed to complete her last bit of the Chapter 7. Now it depends on me to check it. Hopefully I can do it swiftly. Most likely throughout the weekend.
