Day 203 Task – Miscellaneous Tasks

Today, I am not going to specify a special official task. I will be sharing a few that I will do today and that include:

  1. Improving and making correction for ICLCA manuscript after receiving comments from reviewers few days ago.
  2. To do review for Education for Chemical Engineer (ECE) journal.
  3. To work on my Master student research paper.
  4. To follow up on my PhD students job progress – Four of them at the moment which I am the main SV.
  5.  To work on HTGYE book.
  6. To check and review my task as External / Industrial Panel for UMS Chemical Engineering Plant Design Project this coming Thursday.

OK, let’s just see at the end of the day if I managed to complete all of it. If I can complete more than half of the list, that’s still good enough, good progress for me.

Day 202 Task – Finalizing Plant Design Project Marks

Yesterday I focus on finalizing Master Safety marks. Today, my prime goal is to once again check the final marks for Plant Design Project (PDP). There are so many marks, so many data, so critical and no room for mistakes as the credit marks for PDP is huge. It was very challenging, really, and at one point I have to seek help from Dr. Azizul to double check / audit the marks that I have finalized. Alhamdulillah, he pointed out one part which was not correct and after that all the marks were fine.

Bottom line, in this particular task, i learned that we need to be very careful, meticulous, detail, patient, when handling student marks which could be a critical point that direct the faith of their live direction. This is no joke. I don’t want to be making silly or careless mistake in deciding an important grade for this capstone subject. There’s no wrong to seek some assistance from our team to double check our work. It shows that we have integrity, nothing to hide, no personal agenda and no ulterior motive.

Day 201 Task – Finalizing Master MKKH Marks

Today, after getting the marks from Dr. Norzita, I checked, combined the marks and finalized it. The final marks result was not as usual but it was just fine for the 9 students under us. Though the final marks are ready, I have not yet key it into the system. I will probably do it in this coming few days as I want to focus on triple checking the Plant Design Project (PDP) marks which have so many data. Imagine having 14 Course Learning Outcomes for PDP and each weak there’s like 1 CLO to cover. Wish me luck.

Day 200 Task – Taking Break

Today, I decided not to deal with anything related to official work. It’s not because it was the 200th day and I needed a celebration. It was just an impulse decision. I just wanted to free myself from academic and research related activities for a while.

Hence, I just did other home activities, home stuffs such as cutting the grass using our new lawn mower, cleaning this and that in the house, a bit of home chores etc. Sometimes we need to do things differently to right?

Day 199 Task – AJEE Management

This is one task which I have to monitor and handle from time to time and it’s proven quite challenging. But it is OK. I’m up to the challenge which I have taken since the beginning of MCO Covid 19. If I am not mistaken it has been about 3 or 4 months since I took over handling this AJEE journal from Prof Fatin. Alhamdulillah we have managed to published Volume 4 Issue 1. Now I am working on to publish Volume 4 Issue 2. InsyaAllah, please pray for us to make AJEE a scopus indexed journal soon.

Day 198 Task – A Session with my IEM Mentee

Eversince I became a Professional Engineer around 2011, I had a lot of request for a formal IEM mentorship to be a Professional Engineer, a similar one which i had 13 years ago. My IEM Mentor was Ir. Hj. Tunai Shamsidi who worked at Minconsult Sdn Bhd, Petaling Jaya. That time there only 2 Professional Engineer specilizing in Chemical Engineering in Johor Bahru. Unfortunately both of them could not take me as a mentee and as a result I have to search one which is out of JB.

Today I had my first session as an official mentor to a female chemical engineer graduated from UTM around 2013. She seems a very driven and motivated person. I never known or seen her yet until our first Whatsapp video meeting. I briefed her what to do, what to expect, a few strategies and so on. Looking at her passsed experiences, I have no doubt that she can be a professional engineer by the end of 2022, insyaAllah.

Day 197 Task – Application to Purchase a Chemical Engineering Software from my Research Grant

I have always wanted to purchase one particular chemical engineering software for my research work. It is quite a simple but very good software to perform various chemical thermodynamic operations, equilibrium composition, and many more. Due to more stringent budget constraint since 2013, it was very difficult for me to include the budget to purchase the software in all my research grant.

However, since the pandemic hit us badly this year, there’s no way of us travelling anywhere for conference. Hence, I took this opportunity to use the travelling budget to appeal and justify for the software purchase.

Day 196 Task – Grading MKKK Safety in Chemical Plant MKKK1653

After completing my grading and marking for Plant Design Project (PDP) Course and also Graduate Student Attribute (GSA) Course, it’s time to focus on marking my master course MKKK1653 Master in Chemical Plant Safety. At this point of time of writing this post, I have not completed, but I can say I have made significant progress in the markings. I am left with less than half of the marking. If I can complete all of this by tomorrow, I will be very happy guy.

At the same time, I also watched few webminars which were scheduled today. The one that I really follow was this one:

ACADEMIC PROFILE WEBINAR I RESEARCH 404: MAKING SURE YOU’RE GOOGLEABLE. The details of the event are as below:

Date : 14 July 2020 (Tuesday)
Time : 10.30 am
Speaker: Mr. Chew Teong Han, Research Officer, Strategic Section DVCRI Office
Webex Link: http://qr.w69b.com/g/reXx2wwUM

Day 195 Task – Teaching my Undergraduate Research Student How Thermodynamic Modelling Analysis Using HSC Chemistry

In view of Covid 19, the undergraduate research students were asked to do non-experimental based research. Since I have asked them to perform thermodynamic analysis study using a software, I took the time to record a video of me showing how to use the software. Then I share the video to them and later at night, we had a Webex meeting for them to ask questions in case they have any problems. The video have actually helped them to learn faster than i thought.

Day 194 Task – Finalizing PDP and GSA Marks

I was very focus to complete the marking of the Plant Design Project (PDP) and Graduate Student Attribute (GSA) course marks. One full day was required just to do that. Finally I managed to filled in GSA marks in AIMS, but have not release the marks yet for students to view. In the other hand, I am planning to audit my own PDP marks once again since there are tonnes of marks and assessment for PDP. It’s like that due the fact that it is a Capstone Course with 14 CLO, the most a course in Chemical Engineering could ever have.
