Mari Kita Raikan Para Graduan Dan Tetamu Sempena Majlis Konvokesyen Ke-62

Following are the speech from UTM Vice-Chancellor in conjunction of the 62nd UTM Convocation…

I hope that all of you are doing well and in good health.

As we all know, the 62nd Convocation Ceremony will take place on the 29thApril until 30th April 2019. As I have shared during the last convocation, to us (as staff) , the convocation is a routine ceremony happening twice a year. However, to the graduates and their families, the convocation ceremony is an occasion much awaited, which is a proud and meaningful moment to celebrate their success.

Therefore, in conjunction with this special event, I would urge the whole UTM community to celebrate this memorable occasion with the graduates and their families. We should appreciate this happy moment in celebration with students and their families. As we frequently mention, the whole campus eco-system is involved in nurturing the students. As such, I would like to invite everyone in UTM community at all levels to give the best to all our guests.

Let them feel our friendly culture. Let us pray that this UTM Convocation Ceremony will run smoothly with much joy and happiness. Lastly, I would like to express my utmost appreciation to everyone who are involved directly and indirectly in making this convocation and all other programmes taking place in conjunction with this convocation Ceremony a successful one.

Thank you.

Wahid Omar

Jury for 3 Minute Thesis Competition

Today I became one of the jury for the 3 Minute Thesis Competition which was held in conjunction of the UTM Research Week Carnival 2019. Alongside with me was Prof. Madya. Dr. Mazura Jusoh and Prof. Madya Dr. Mohd Kamaruddin Abd Hamid. During my session, there were 16 postgraduate students contesting. At the end we chose 3 of the best to proceed to the next round.

Information Technology Award @ Anugerah Teknologi Maklumat (ATM) 2018

This year, I represented the faculty for the Anugerah Teknologi Maklumat (ATM). This was my second time representing my faculty. This time I have some experienced after my solo presentation last year. Last year presentation was a naive, immature, lack of information, lack of experience presentation. This year, I hope we can get something out of all those who contested. We’re hoping to be in the top 3 position. That will be good enough for us. Lets wait and see in the Anugerah Citra Karisma which will take place in the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Chemical Engineering Education – Team Peer Teaching in action

1st year 1st semester chemical engineering students (2016) for Faculty of Chemical & Energy Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Applying Corporative Problem Based Learning (CPBL). This is what we had in our class on Tuesday (4th October 2016). From our observation, initially the students seems to be not sure and uncomfortable to do the team peer teaching. However, after few moments and some guidance by us (me and Dr. Siti Hajjar), they seems to get the momentum, enjoyed and could not stop.

This is indeed an interesting method for teaching and learning. If you have not implementing this teaching method, try it out.

New Promotional FCEE / UTM Infographic

Well done Mr. Vekes and his Post Graduate Committee members for producing a very good infographic at such a short notice. If I am a student, I will immediately fall in love with UTM after seeing this beneficial and full of facts infographics.

Quarter Final – UTM Inter Departmental Soccer Tournament

2016-bola

Yesterday, FCEE team played as per schedule versus Chancellery. The game took place at KDOJ football field. It was a warm and dry afternoon, unlike our first game where it was gloomy and wet.

Result

FCEE won the match. 3-1.

As usual, I played the right back position. However, this time I played in the second half because I arrived late. Well, actually based on my age, I planned to play less due to lack of stamina and lack of fitness. I believed I played around 15-20 minutes, but it felt like it was forever….haha…

What does the result means now?

We proceed to the semi final. We will battle Pendaftar, a very strong team and the regular champion of the tournament for the past several years. But we should not be that nervous. We will try to relax and play our game calmly with discipline. Wish us luck ok!

A Surprise Visit …

Today, we were lucky to host Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Didi Dwi Anggoro, my colleague from Universiti Diponogoro (UNDIP), Semarang, Indonesia (and his family). He was in Johor since yesterday for his daughter’s convocation in Marsah, Johor Bahru. It’s not his (and his family) first visit to our humble house. They have been here in several occasions for the past few years.

Who is Didi Dwi Anggoro?

He is a very nice friendly guy whom which when I was doing my Chemical Engineering Masters Degree, he did his Ph.D. We were in the same research group – Chemical Reaction Engineering Group (CREG). We were both supervised by Dr. Nor Aishah Saidina Amin (Now Prof. Nor Aishah Saidina Amin @ Prof NASA). That era which we were in was betweeen 1999 – 2003. His research areas are applied catalysis, reaction engineering and biofuel.

3rd Game – UTM Inter-Deparment Badminton

We just played our 3rd game tonight, which is the first in this knock-out stage. This time we battled Faculty of Science. Surprisingly, I was asked to play single. Hesitated, I obliged with the decision by our team leader / manager (Prof. G). The game started.

If you just read this post, you should read 2 earlier post here and here, to know the complete overview of our game.

Result:

(1) 1st double (PM Dr. Asnizam & Ahmad MPRC) – we LOST unfortunately.

(2) Single (ME) – surprisingly I won (YES)! I was lucky I guessed 🙂 God helped me! And it was a straight set. My opponent was exhausted and slightly heavier than me. That’s some advantage for me.

(3) 2nd double (Prof G. & Roslan Jas) – the decider – again, we lost unfortunately.

OVERALL – We LOST and will not proceed to the quarter final tomorrow.

Well, it’s ok. It’s just a nice game. I treated it as an activity for me to exercise (but during the game, it can turned out to be very tense!)

InsyaAllah, we’ll try next year 🙂

Go FCEE!

UTM Inter Departmental Soccer Tournament

This is surprisingly my 1st soccer game in a space of 4 years. Previously I played for the faculty, but since I experienced some pain in my knees (in 2012), I have to relaxed and considered stop playing. But, yesterday…haha… it was a comeback. I anticipated to play for 10 minutes, but it ended I played for 45 minutes. Need to work on my stamina.
