HOW TO STUDY BASED ON HOW MEMORY WORKS

Sleep, take breaks, take good notes, learn the material not memorize, and keep conditions the same during studying and testing.

GOAT ME:

  • G is generate and test. Quiz yourself and teach others.
  • O is organize. You can organize with outlines, pictures, color coding, related material, etc.
  • A is for avoid illusions of learning. Avoid study methods that rely on recognition. If you can’t remember it at any given time you don’t know it. Learn not memorize or familiarize.
  • T is for Take Breaks. Make sure you take breaks and sleep. You can’t remember large chunks on information in one sitting. Stand up and come back to it.
  • M is match learning and testing conditions. Learn in similar conditions as when you will take the test. my tip is to chew gum when studying a certain subject and chew the same flavor of gum during the test. It will help you remember
  • E is elaborate. Think deeply about the material and make other associations with it.

Confidence is when you walk into a room and assume everyone already likes you

Everyone just wants to be liked, so if you pretend they already like you, you’ll like them, and then they’ll be happy that you already like them

Stop procastinating!

Being lazy is so much more relaxing when you know you’ve taken care of all your tasks for the day.

Advice for new students

  1. Go to class always. It’s really easy to decide to sleep in or whatever but it can quickly become a habit.
  • the university isn’t paying you to go to class, you are paying the professor to show up to class. So why pay for something and not use it?
  1. Do your work and you’ll make it through. Become lazy and indulge in things that will distract you and you will more than likely fail.
  2. Make a friend in each of your classes. Not only will you be able to help one another with the course material, but by the end of your time you’ll have a decent sized network.
  • Especially as a freshman, everyone’s on the same page. Just stick your hand out and introduce yourself. Everyone wants to make new friends.
  • Talk to every girl (or guy). Don’t be afraid
  1. Join an organization. You get to meet like-minded people and get a solid friend base
  2. Talk to your professors. They love to help students
  • After class go chat with your professor, doesn’t really matter if it’s class related or not

The main goal here is to get them to put a face to your name, this will help you when they’re grading your exams and your borderline D/C, C/B, B/A

Sometime doing work is more rewarding

You know you hate to spend time doing your work compared to relaxing in front of the TV. But the feeling of accomplishing something with your own self is very rewarding.

You can achieve anything with effort

I think a mindset change is needed. We should not have labels such as ‘a bad at math’ child, and then get left behind. Children should know that they can achieve anything with effort. They should not feel hopeless if they are bad at anything.

I work in schools delivering growth mindset materials that are heavily backed up by my YouTube content. Schools in the UK are increasing promoting a “you can achieve anything with effort” mentality that is all based around a book called ‘Mindset’ by Carol Dweck.
I partnered with a council to deliver some talks to a number of schools and it went well. That later developed into a job.
Sometimes it’s hard to tell students to just “keep trying” or that their abilities are not pre-assigned but are malleable and can be improved. I offer a change of pace with videos, and basically, a live show. It’s super fun and I believe the students get something out of it. They are inspiring to me at least.
